Hanyu Pinyin is a phonetic tool to learn Mandarin Chinese. It is an automated dictionary system that transliterates Chinese words into the Roman alphabet. Though there are many other Romanization systems to learn Mandarin, Pinyin is the most widely used in the world. For many foreign language students, learning Pinyin is the first step to successfully speaking fluent Mandarin Chinese.

Pinyin Rx is a simple, portable and entertaining way to learn Pinyin (literally, “spelled sound”) for both children and adults. To learn any new language, listening and practicing plays an integral part in the process. Pinyin Rx provides the sounds for the initial and final components of Pinyin with a simple touch of a button, and it also allows students to record their own voices. Students can then compare their recording with that of the native speaker. Some standard phrases and the stress tones in Mandarin are also included in the application.

Using the application:

To use Pinyin Rx, click one of the four (4) menu items (Initial, Final, Tone or Phrases), and then click a letter or phrase from the scrollable list below the menu. Next, click the Play button to hear the voice of the native speaker. Use the Record button to record voice practice, and then use the Play Mine button to hear how close the voice practice is to the native speaker.
